Hennepin Energy Recycling Center – Cooling Tower

Share Project:

Building on our relationship and experience with Hennepin County and Covanta Energy, Corval was awarded a contract for the rebuilding of the plume abatement system on the existing cooling tower. The HERC facility is owned by Hennepin County and is operated and maintained by Covanta Energy. The cooling tower was renovated to upgrade the plume abatement system and improve operations and maintenance capabilities. Upgrades included new flow and temperature monitoring devices, instrumentation, new motors and controls for air intake dampers, new intake dampers, new motor activated valves, replacement of vacuum lines and pumps, new foundations with platforms and walkways to improve access, and new electrical service to the tower. Challenges on this project included staging of materials on an already tight site, dealing with winter conditions and coordinating work to keep the cooling tower operational throughout the project.
